The historic icon, The Rex Theatre in downtown Pensacola, was already well known and loved, but it was also underutilized during the week. Generation Church, whom The Rex is home to, saw a need to bring community together in an inviting space more than just on Sundays. The church came to me to help imagine and develop a coffee shop in the lobby, The Rex Café. Collaborating with the project manager, we created a vision for the interior space and the brand identity that highlighted the theatre’s 1930s Art Deco roots while maintaining a contemporary simplicity.
The building itself exudes character from which we didn’t want to distract. Using it as inspiration, we infused the brand with Art Deco patterns, color, and a hand crafted feel through a custom hand lettered logo and illustrations. We wanted every customer touch point to feel warm, inviting, and sleek. The café wanted to provide more than just exceptional coffee (which they do), they wanted the community to feel like their mental and emotional cup was also being filled. We succinctly summed up this mission with “From Sip to Soul,” which is used across social and print collateral. Working under both budget and tight time constraints, we were able to bring a coffee spot to the public that will be long-lasting and long loved.
“The cafe’s chic interior features design elements specifically selected to provide the look and feel of a relaxed European-style cafe. The design features a well-balanced mix of natural materials and modern decorative elements, giving the space a bright, open and airy feel, with plenty of natural wood, white marble countertops, clusters of seating arrangements and bright pops of color.”
